Sunday Funnies: DICK TRACY
Dick Tracy is another one of those newspaper strips that probably will never end. It began in 1931 and is still running today. I'm pretty sure that just about everybody has heard of him, so there's really no need for an introduction.
But strips like this make me wonder how hard it is for a young cartoonist to break into the industry. Not that I think that all the old strips should be retired, but is there even room in the funny pages for new talent? Is there even going to be a next generation of comic strips that aren't webcomics? To me it seems like the papers are dominated by older established strips, not that I don't enjoy them, but it seems that they should end some old strips at some point. A good example would be Bill Watterson; strips should end when the original creators decide they should, not when the syndicate decides.
