Machine Man is sort of an unusual character because he was created for one of Marvel's licensed series (2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY), and then ended up becoming a part of their regular continuity. Only a very few other characters have made this transition.
Originally a Jack Kirby creation, Steve Ditko also worked on the series before it was cancelled for the second time.
This particular story appeared right around the time Marvel was trying to revive the character again, but other than a crossover with the Avengers, the revival failed almost as much as the villain in this story
